- (1797–1878)Theologian.Hodge was ordained into the Presbyterian ministry in 1821 and for most of his adult life he taught theology at the University of Princeton in America. He was the author of several New Testament commentaries, but his major work was Systematic Theology, a Calvinistic exposition of the doctrines of sin, election and biblical infallibility. He regarded the theory of Charles darwin as ‘atheism to all intents and purposes, and he disapproved of the moral optimism of his age. Always he stressed religious understanding over the more fashionable and Romantic mystical experience. He had a considerable following among his students and his views were known as ‘Princeton orthodoxy’. He himself rejoiced that the seminary had ‘never originated a new idea’.W.
